Vance Clemmons was quite the interesting man who led quite the extraordinary life. Born in 1888 in Dublin, Ireland, Clemmons grew up in a working class family, quite literally born on a farm raising livestock and growing crops since before he could even speak. When he came of age, Clemmons found himself fighting in the Irish Civil War of 1924. Clemmons would later immigrate to the United States, take a job as a cook, open his own restaurant eventually, get married to a woman 20 years his junior, start a family and end up fighting in the second World War. But like all things the life of Vance Clemmons must eventually come to an end as no man nor creature can live forever.
Clemmons is surrounded by numerous family and friends on a cold and dark evening. He is nearing the end and he knows it. Part of him has accepted his impending death, the other part is angry over the fact that he won’t live to see his 100th birthday. I then appear in the form of a shadowy figure who only Clemmons can see.
Clemmon’s Sister In-Law Lois: Do you want some water Vance?
Clemmons: No, I’m going away tonight and death itself has come to take me he’s standing in the corner over there (points) bring me a bourbon.
No one else can see me and many assume Clemmons is delirious. He drinks his bourbon, gets a refill, coughs a bit and drifts off to sleep. Clemmons passes away peaceful in a night and we are now standing at the void between worlds and life and death.
Clemmons: So this is it huh? It’s all over?
Wraith: Sure as shit is, but hey you had a good run.
Clemmons: Where am I off to?
Wraith: Not my concern old man. Only thing I know is that the world is finished with you and your time is up. You accomplished all you could accomplish in that life and it’s all over but the tears of those who actually liked, loved and adored you. Of course, there will always be those who are thrilled to see you make your departure.
Clemmons: Well I have no regrets I lived a good life. A very rich, very full life. Hopefully in my own way I helped make the world a better place than I found it.
Wraith: Whatever the case may be or may have been done is done and that life is but a memory now. You are off to your final destination and I’m off to my next case. Adios amigo.
